Wisdom Teeth and Extractions

You need an extraction. There are 4 types of extraction procedures we offer:

  • Simple extraction-These require a mild to moderate amount of force to loosen the tooth and remove it.
  • Surgical extraction-These require allowing room to grasp the tooth for removal via reflection of gum tissue, removal of bone and/or removal of tooth structure. Still a mild to moderate amount of pressure will be applied.
  • Soft tissue extraction– This is when the tooth is still partially covered by the gums and the gums need to be retracted in order for the dentist to remove the tooth. A mild to moderate amount of force will be applied.
  • Partially bony extraction– This is when bone is partially covering the tooth and needs to be removed before the tooth can be extracted. Still a mild to moderate amount of pressure is applied.
  • Complete bony extractions– These will be referred to an oral surgeon.

If you have had an extraction of a tooth that is not a wisdom tooth, it is important to replace it to prevent drifting of the surrounding teeth. Drifting can cause other problems including: food traps, gum problems and TMJ issues. Ask your dentist about what your options are: an implant, a bridge, or a partial.
